DGI was contracted to build a Deep Reach Winch for use on board of a Multi Service Vessel (MSV). The Deep Reach Winch (DRW) is a highly specialized piece of equipment, developed to be used in very harsh, offshore environments. The DRW has a capacity of 7.3 MT (16,000 lbs) at depths up to 3,353 meter (11,000 ft) carried on 15 layers of wire-rope to deploy and retrieve various components on the seabed.
“The client first approached us for a much smaller project requiring our expertise in refurbishing some of their existing equipment”, says DGI Project Manager, Kenny Rogers. “They were so impressed with how we handled that project that they gave us the opportunity to design and build the DRW. We have continued to prove ourselves with the DRW which has opened the door for yet more projects and we are positioning ourselves to be one of their preferred equipment suppliers.”
"It has been a pleasure working with DGI. They provide a great service and product from initial design through to delivery and after sale service."
Stephen Pfiester, Lead Engineer
DGI worked closely with the client to develop the DRW and meet their strict operational requirements. The DRW was provided as a complete system (winch, remote control station and hydraulic power units) and also incorporated a shipping frame where the winch could be operated both within and outside the protective frame. The success of the winch has resulted in multiple orders from Oceaneering and has set an industry standard for this type of application.
Stephen Pfiester, Lead Engineer says: “It has been a pleasure working with DGI. They provide a great service and product from initial design through to delivery and after sale service. The first delivery of winches and HPUs exceeded our expectations in both quality and performance and since these first units, we have continued to look for opportunities to improve the system with subsequent orders. I look forward to future projects and believe these will expand beyond winches and HPUs.”
The development of the DRW was instrumental to DGI broadening their range of products into bigger and more elaborate systems used in deploying some of the most sophisticated subsea equipment available in the industry and positions them as premier providers in this specialist area.
